Robert Steven Pohl (“Bob”), a well-known Ephraim businessman, was revered for his acute sense of humor and his outgoing personality. His career in publishing spanned over 40 years, with The La Grange Shopper, La Grange, IL., The Door Reminder in Sister Bay, and most recently with Door Guide Publishing as co-publisher of the “Door County Go Guide” and “Door County Dining Guide.”
For Bob, business was entirely personal, and his route across the county selling print ads had its required stops: behind Fish Creek BP for coffee with “the guys,” Pelletier’s for a quick breakfast, the Peninsula Music Festival for the kibitzing and free coffee, White Gull Inn to catch up on the local news, the former C&C Club to hang out in the kitchen, Stillwater’s Grill for a fast hot dog basket, then on to Sister Bay Trading as his northern base of operations.
He affectionately called his many business associates “my people” and greatly missed each of them during his few out-of-county vacations. In between all the constant socializing, Bob was renowned for over 20 years as the most productive advertising salesman in Door County and was highly competitive as to who could legitimately claim that title.
Bob was an avid lover of boating, classic cars, and tending to his yard and had an undying affection for his beloved Labrador Retrievers: Gracie, Sadie, Katie and Ruby. His almost two-year battle with cancer ended by the grace of God as he, with his loving wife of 36 years by his side, passed from this world into the next. He is survived by his wife Janet; as well as his children, Robert Jr., Brian (Carrie), John (Suzanne) and his stepchildren, Marjory Champion (Robert), Michelle Brown (Richard) and Michael Zea (Elizabeth) as well as several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father – Herbert R. and Mary L. Pohl and grandson, Jordan Robert Champion. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, March 25th 2012 from 2 p.m. until 3p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 836 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI. 54235. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Door County Humane Society, c/o Marilyn Jensen, Director, 920-421-0012. www.caspersonfuneralhome.com
